Owning a classic motorcycle is a rewarding experience — but it comes with responsibilities that differ significantly from modern bike ownership. These machines were built in a different era, with different materials, tolerances, and expectations. Understanding what they need is the key to a long and trouble-free relationship with your machine. At South Wales Classic Motorbikes, we are passionate about helping owners keep their bikes in excellent condition.
Regular Use Is the Best Medicine
Classic motorcycles are generally happier when used regularly. Prolonged inactivity allows fuel to degrade in carburettors, oil to migrate away from critical surfaces, and rubber seals to dry and crack. If possible, run your bike at least once a month, even if only for a short distance.
Fresh Oil and Filters
Engine oil in a classic motorcycle works hard and degrades more quickly than in modern engines, partly due to the simpler filtration systems on older bikes. Change your oil at least annually, or after every 1,000 to 1,500 miles, whichever comes first. Use an oil specifically formulated for classic or vintage engines.
Carburettor Care
Modern petrol containing ethanol can cause problems with rubber components in older carburettors and can form deposits that block jets. Drain the carburettor if the bike will be unused for more than a few weeks, and use an ethanol-resistant fuel treatment.
Electrics and Connections
Older electrical systems, particularly those using Lucas components, benefit from regular inspection of connections for corrosion and looseness. A can of electrical contact cleaner and some dielectric grease go a long way toward preventing electrical gremlins.
