Storing a Classic Motorcycle: Best Practice for Long-Term Preservation

For many classic motorcycle owners, the winter months or extended periods of non-use require the machine to be taken off the road and stored. How a classic is stored during these periods has a significant bearing on its condition when it returns to active use — and on its long-term preservation. Preparing for Storage

Before putting a classic motorcycle into storage, it is worth investing time in proper preparation. Change the engine oil — used oil contains acidic combustion products that will corrode internal surfaces if left in contact with metal for months. Run the engine briefly to circulate the new oil through the system, then switch off.

Fuel System Care

Modern ethanol-blended petrol degrades relatively quickly and can leave varnish deposits in carburettor jets and passages. Either drain the carburettor completely or treat the fuel with a quality stabiliser before storage. If the tank will be storing fuel over winter, ensure it is full to minimise condensation forming on internal surfaces.

Battery Maintenance

A classic motorcycle battery left unattended over winter will typically discharge fully and may be permanently damaged. Ideally, connect the battery to a quality intelligent charger — such as an Optimate or CTEK unit — that will maintain charge without overcharging. Alternatively, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry location, topping up its charge monthly.

Protection from Moisture and Pests

Store the motorcycle in a dry, ventilated space. A breathable cover prevents dust accumulation while allowing moisture to escape — avoid non-breathable covers that trap condensation against the paint and chrome. Plug the exhaust outlet and air intake to discourage small animals or insects from taking up residence.
