A static inspection tells you a great deal about a classic motorcycle — but a test ride tells you things that no amount of looking can reveal. How an engine pulls through the rev range, how the gearbox shifts, how the brakes feel, and how the chassis responds are all impossible to assess accurately without riding the machine. At South Wales Classic Motorbikes, we encourage all serious buyers to test ride any machine they are considering, and we want to share what to pay attention to when they do.
Starting and Warming Up
Note how easily the engine starts from cold — a well-set-up classic should start without excessive difficulty. Listen carefully as it warms up: ticking from the top end is common and often acceptable on older engines, but heavy mechanical knocking from the bottom end is more concerning and warrants further investigation.
Engine Behaviour Through the Rev Range
Once warm, assess how the engine pulls from low revs. Hesitation, flat spots, or a tendency to four-stroke at low speeds may indicate carburation issues — often correctable but worth factoring into your assessment. A strong, progressive pull through the mid-range and into the top end is a good sign. Blue or excessive smoke from the exhaust suggests burning oil and is a more significant concern.
Gearbox and Clutch
Classic gearboxes — particularly on British bikes — are rarely as slick as a modern unit, but they should engage gears cleanly with positive selection and no jumping out of gear under load. The clutch should engage smoothly and progressively, with no slipping under hard acceleration.
Brakes and Steering
Drum brakes on older machines will never match the stopping power of modern disc systems, but they should be progressive and capable of bringing the machine to a confident stop. Steering should feel stable and neutral — any tendency to wander, weave, or feel vague at speed warrants investigation of the steering head bearings, wheel bearings, and tyre condition.
